On International Women's Day, the death sentences and life imprisonments of female political prisoners should be revoked
Statement by the Secretariat of the
Kurdistan Human Rights Organization
While congratulating International Women's Day to all women in Kurdistan, Iran, and the world, and remembering the plight of imprisoned and detained women—as stated in reports published by active human rights organizations—dozens of female prisoners with various non-political and political charges and accusations have been sentenced to death, and hundreds of women are also facing heavy prison sentences under the aforementioned headings.
In this regard, among the women facing the death penalty on charges of political activities, mention can be made of two Kurdish female prisoners, "Varisheh Moradi" [Note: translated as Varisheh Moradi matching her commonly known name, while preserving the exact Persian spelling "وریشه محمدی" / Varisheh Mohammadi] and "Pakhshan Azizi," as well as "Sharifeh Mohammadi," and also the political prisoner sentenced to life imprisonment "Zeinab Jalalian," who has been in prison for about 17 years.
The Kurdistan Human Rights Organization, while expressing concern over the situation of women condemned to death—particularly Mrs. Varisheh Mohammadi, Pakhshan Azizi, and Sharifeh Mohammadi, and life-sentenced prisoner Zeinab Jalalian—on "International Women's Day," demands a review of the judicial status and the annulment of the death and life imprisonment sentences of the aforementioned individuals and other death-row convicts.
